Evaluation of heavy metals (Ni and Cu) balance of the water-shed area of subarctic lake (case study of the Chunozero Lake)

The typical area with widespread rocks of the "gabbro" mineral association (Pl+Amp) within the Fedorova Tundra intrusive has been studied. It has been shown that "gabbro" is a result of autometamorphic reworking of rocks with the three-mineral gabbronoritic association – Pl+Opx+Cpx.

Current trends in biota changes of the Khibiny mountains freshwater ecosystems

The fauna of soil-dwelling invertebrate animals on the northeastern slope of Vudjavrchorr mountain (Khibiny massif) has been studied. Results concerning taxonomic and trophic diversity, number and biomass of invertebrates have been obtained. The domination structure of animal local communities in the mountain litters has been investigated. Similarity and differences in the community of invertebrate animals in the mountain and flat forest soils have been discussed.

Forecasting of long-term changes of freshwater regional systems of fishery in Arctic

Researches of ecological status of lakes of Northwest of the Murmansk region and frontier areas of Norway and Finland have been carried out. Despite of decrease of emissions and drainages of polluting substances by the "Pechenganickel" Company for last 20 years the tendency of amplification of anthropogenic loading on watersheds of lakes has been revealed. The high degree of accumulation of heavy metals in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and the length of their self-cleaning have led to the prediction: an intense flow of heavy metals in the water will continue even if a sharp decrease or complete cessation of hazardous substances' emissions in the environment take place. These emissions will negatively affect on reproduction of fish stocks.

Some aspects of current state of freshwater resources in the Murmansk region

Aspects of reducing the resource potential of the surface waters of the Murmansk region in the global climate change and the environment and their irrational use have been considered. Increase of aquatic toxicity, radical restructuring of the structural and functional characteristics of aquatic communities, changes in trophic status of lakes, reducing the stability of freshwater ecosystems, increasing the risk of catastrophic degradation have been shown. Taking into account the regional peculiarities some indicators of the surface waters quality of the Murmansk region have been proposed.

Concentrations of bioavailable forms of metal compounds in bottom sediments of lakes and the enrichment factor as attributes of reservoirs' ecological situation (by the example of Murmansk region lake

Concentrations of Al, Fe, Sr, Zn, Cu and Ni bioavailable forms in bottom sediments (BS) of lakes of the Murmansk region have been studied. The investigated lakes (the Bolshoy Vudjavr, Malyi Vudjavr, Nyudjavr and the Guba Belaya of the lake Bolshaya Imandra) belong to the catchment area of the Bolshaya Imandra and are influenced by human impact. The highest percentage of bioavailable forms most of metals has been found in BS of the lake Nyudjavr. According to the enrichment factors of elements and Risk Assessment Code the most dangerous ecological situation has been defined for the lake Nyudjavr.
